In the heart of Karlovy Vary, in the picturesque Valeč castle complex, the extensive renovation of a historic greenhouse, which represents a rare example of 19th-century glasshouse architecture, continues in 2025. The reconstruction of a greenhouse, originally consisting of three sections with different temperatures – cold, warm and palm sections – is not only a construction challenge, but also a botanical one. The original structure, dating back to the 1870s, was imported from Vienna and is now being renovated with maximum preservation of authenticity. The work includes the replacement of steel and cast iron structural elements, a new glass shell and modern engineering networks.
The craftsmen also took great care of the neighboring garden building, which they added a modern toilet extension and an observation terrace, bringing visitors an unusual experience. This comprehensive reconstruction required a budget of 37 million crowns and was supported by a subsidy from the Ministry of Culture.

The cold part of the greenhouse hosted primroses, azaleas and fuchsias, the warm part was home to orchids and moisture-loving plants, while the palm part attracted visitors with exotic species of palms and cacti. Since then, the greenhouse has gradually fallen into disrepair before its current restoration began.

The castle management is striving to ensure that after the reconstruction is completed, the building is rented to a private operator who will establish a restaurant or café there. This would give the greenhouse a new function, while also making it an attractive tourist destination and a venue for cultural events or weddings.
