In 2024, the Faculty of Architecture of the Czech Technical University once again succeeded in uncovering unique projects that represent a dynamic shift in the architectural thinking of young talents. Among the awarded designs, concepts such as War Shelter Design, Greenhouse Pro and the innovative Institute of Memory Národa Architektura stood out, which emphasize a sensitive approach to history, urban planning and innovation. These projects carry not only aesthetic but also functional value, reflecting the need to connect the past with the present in the changing environment of urban and rural locations.
The War Shelter project, designed by student Natália Finsterlová from the Sládek–Blank studio, offers an innovative reinterpretation of the bunker as a safe haven from the threats of war. By using three underground floors with an open central space and purposefully placed chambers that serve as bedrooms, bathrooms or storage spaces, a complex environment for stable life underground is created. A distinctive architectural element is the connection of the underground with the surface by spiral stairs and an elevator, which lead to a cottage surrounded by an internal atrium, where daylight penetrates.
The jury especially appreciated the progressive use of the castle floor plan, which transforms the historical principle into a contemporary concept of a bunker. The War Shelter Design represents not only a practical shelter, but also a sensitively designed living space that combines functionality with airiness and aesthetic sense.
The overall concept simplifies the relationships between serviced and service areas, thereby supporting the comfort of users and high-quality living areas. The project is thus relevant not only due to increased attention to security measures, but also due to its ability to transform a difficult topic into an inspiring architectural vision.
The Greenhouse Na Brusnici, a work by Karolína Hausenblasová from the Císler–Milerová studio, represents a subtle yet powerful intervention in the environment of the northern bastions of Prague. The designed public greenhouse not only respects the historical background and the presence of the ruins of the walls, but also revives the garden ceremony and connects the inner and outer worlds of the city.
The design uses a silver colonnade that surrounds the transparent volume of the greenhouse serving as a café and the park’s background. Etched glass technology and plants impose a living image on the walls of the surrounding park, creating a „garden within a garden“ – an innovative space that underlines the importance of connecting nature and urban architecture.
Thanks to this innovation, visitors can experience relaxation in direct contact with history and modern aesthetics, which confirms the Greenhouse Innovation as a key project in the field of urban development.
The complex work integrates existing landscape elements into the urban structure and proposes the alignment of the tram line, which opens up views of St. Vitus Cathedral. The greenhouse thus not only aesthetically but also functionally responds to the needs of the city’s residents and guests and expands the concept of the park. The diploma thesis of David Foud from the Hradečný–Hradečná studio in the village of Úboč represents a thoughtful connection of history and the present. The Institute of Memory of the Nation is located here in a reconstructed rural homestead, which symbolically reflects the fate of estates affected by persecution in the 1950s.
The design respects the authenticity of local buildings and extends them with underground and above-ground structures, which form a complex whole connected by a simple and functional form. It includes an audiovisual exhibition that revives the Memory of the Nation Projects and at the same time offers spaces for education and community meetings.
The project reflects an inspiring combination of historical continuity and modern architecture, which evokes a sensitive approach to the topic of memory and identity. The Arch Team Institute was able to design a space that not only preserves but also develops the cultural heritage of the region.
Given the significance and specifics of the site, the concept was evaluated as comprehensive and sensitive to history. In particular, the ability to incorporate modern elements in a way that does not disrupt the expression of the original building, while supporting its new role in public space, was appreciated.
