In the picturesque surroundings of Třeboň, a new chapter in education and sustainable agriculture is opening thanks to a unique aquaponic greenhouse created at the Jakub Krčín Secondary School of Fisheries and Water Management. This innovative project combines fish farming and plant cultivation in a closed recirculating ecosystem, thus presenting a modern approach to aquaponics and hydroponics with an emphasis on sustainable development and efficient management of water resources.

Aquaponics as a bridge between traditional fishing and modern vegetable farming

The new aquaponic greenhouse at the fishing school is not just a teaching facility, but represents a combination of scientific knowledge and traditional methods of fish farming and plant cultivation. This project, whose origins date back to 2017, allows students not only to gain practical experience in raising fish, such as thermophilic species of African catfish and tilapia, but also to understand the complex relationships in the ecosystem, where plants use nutrients from waste products from fish tanks. The greenhouse thus creates a unique educational environment that brings knowledge about efficient and sustainable food production.

Investing in the future of agriculture in the context of climate change

The aquaponic greenhouse project in Třeboň will cost more than 23 million crowns, with the support of the Integrated Regional Operational Programme and the South Bohemian Region. This financial investment reflects the growing need for agriculture to adapt to climate change and increasingly demanding water management. The education of young fishermen and agronomists in this innovative system is therefore key to the future sustainable development of the region and the entire country.

Connecting fish and plants: an example of a sustainable ecosystem in practice

The unique aquaponics system in Třeboň uses the principle of a closed water cycle, where the fish produce the nutrients that the plants need for their growth, and the plants in return purify the water, which is returned to the fish. Thanks to this synergistic relationship, the farm can produce fresh fish and vegetables without the use of chemical fertilizers, which is a significant step towards organic farming that saves water and reduces the environmental burden.

Pupils have the opportunity to gain practical skills in caring for different species of fish and growing a wide range of plants, which expands their knowledge of hydroponics and the sustainable use of resources. This hands-on approach is ideal preparation for future experts in the field of agriculture and the protection of aquatic ecosystems.

Cooperation and sharing of experience between regional schools

The project in Třeboň is not isolated; the fishing school in Vodňany is also taking a similar path, opening a smaller, but technologically focused, professional classroom for recirculation systems and aquaponics. Together, these schools prove that modern technology and the tradition of fish farming can create a synergy that benefits not only the education of students, but also the entire region.

Challenges and benefits of a unique aquaponic system for education and gastronomy

The new greenhouse provides students with more than 30 hours of practical education per week. In addition, the crops and fish are used in the school kitchen, where students prepare dishes from fresh ingredients, gaining comprehensive experience from breeding to gastronomic preparation. In seven months, the farm can produce up to 10 thousand portions of fish meat, which demonstrates the efficiency and potential of the aquaponic system.

Such an approach not only increases the quality of teaching, but also contributes to supporting local food production, minimizing waste, and using natural resources wisely, which is in line with the principles of sustainable development and organic farming.
