Valeč Castle Park, a hidden gem of the Karlovy Vary region, will open part of its historic gardens to visitors this year, but the Palm Greenhouse will remain closed. The Valeč Castle Administration, in cooperation with the Sokolov Branch of the National Heritage Institute, continues to revitalize the unique garden buildings that form an integral part of the region’s cultural heritage. This ambitious project, which includes the restoration of the castle’s greenhouses from the 18th and 19th centuries, focuses on connecting history with modern nature conservation, while striving to offer visitors not only beauty but also educational value through partnerships with organizations such as Botanicus and ArboPark. While the first part of the gardens will open its doors this year, the completion of the reconstruction of the Palm Greenhouse, a key element of the chateau and one of the most charming Czech greenhouses, is planned for the end of 2026.
The Palm Greenhouse, hidden under the stables and carriage house in the lower part of the Valeč Chateau Park, is a 19th-century work characterized by a unique cast-steel construction by the Hönisch company from Vienna. The building is one of the most exceptional and best preserved of its kind in the Czech Republic. Its dome and nave underwent a demanding reconstruction in 1996 and represent a significant example of the architectural and technical art of the time. As part of the overall greenhouse restoration project, which is coordinated by the National Heritage Institute in cooperation with the Sokolov branch and other professional institutions, emphasis is placed on returning the building to its original state from the second half of the 19th century as faithfully as possible.
The restoration of the Palm Greenhouse is not only about preserving the unique architecture, but also about passing on the cultural heritage to future generations. This greenhouse will serve not only as a significant tourist attraction within the framework of the Gardens of Bohemia and festive events such as Flora Olomouc, but also as a means of environmental education associated with ArboPark and the Botanicus projects. The current dismantling of the greenhouse will allow for professional restoration interventions that will return the structure to its original form and at the same time bring modern elements for better use of space and comfort for visitors.
This year, for the first time in a long time, visitors will be able to visit part of the revitalized gardens of Valč Castle, including the newly landscaped orchards and parks that complement the castle greenhouse complex. The castle administration, with the support of the National Institute for Monuments and cooperation with the Sokolov branch, places great emphasis on presenting the gardens as a place not only for relaxation, but also for education about the history and botanical wealth of the region.
The opening of part of the Valč Castle Park will support tourism in the Karlovy Vary region and offer visitors a unique insight into the history of Czech greenhouses and horticultural tradition. Events and guided tours, which will be regularly organized in cooperation with local experts and institutions, will introduce visitors to the rich history of the building and its significance within the Czech Republic and the wider Central European context.
