In the heart of the Modřanská rokle Nature Park in the south of Prague lies a small miracle of nature – the Modřanská wisteria. This fascinating climbing plant, which began to grow in the local wild landscape, is not only an ornament to the local ecosystem, but also a reminder of the richness of the Czech landscape and the power of nature in the metropolis. From its humble beginnings in flower pots through the Starkl gardening to its flowering in green curtains on the edges of gardens, the Modřanská wisteria invites you to discover and take trips to explore the unique macroflora of Modřany.
The magic of wisteria in the Modřanská rokle Nature Park
The Modřanská rokle Nature Park is a renowned location thanks to its diverse macroflora, among which the Modřanská wisteria stands out. Its characteristic late spring flowers have adorned the site since 2020, when it was planted from the first seedlings transported from Smíchov. In 2025, this plant already covers several corners of garden areas and the edges of garages, where its delicate fragrance and beautiful appearance attract the attention of visitors and locals.
The original seedlings were carefully transplanted into the soil in autumn 2021 in north-facing positions, where their growth was initially slower due to limited sunlight. Nevertheless, they gradually grow and today their flowers even hang from the garden gate, which is protected by a metal arch purchased from Zahradnictví Starkl. Despite the initial difficulties, this plant is proof of how wild nature can adapt and develop even in urban conditions, thus enriching the Žampach Arboretum and the Koniklec Ecocentre with another element of Czech nature.
The importance of wisteria in the Czech natural environment
Modřanská wisteria is not only an aesthetic addition, but also part of the ecological system, where it contributes to the diversity and stability of the biotope. Some specimens, planted in the northeastern parts of the gardens, have already managed to grow on the walls of garages, thereby supporting the creation of natural shelters for various types of insects and small animals typical of the Czech landscape.
Supporters of Czech herbs know that this species contributes to the preservation of the traditional flora associated with the region and helps maintain balance in adjacent ecosystems. Modřanská Winery also benefits from the surrounding natural wilderness, which helps maintain a healthy atmosphere unburdened by industrial influences.
How you can contribute to the protection and development of this jewel of nature
