Brno and its surroundings are undergoing significant investments that are fundamentally changing the infrastructure and cultural environment of the metropolitan area. Thanks to six billion in European subsidies, transport networks are being expanded and historical monuments, such as the greenhouse terrace in the Veveří Castle area, are being restored. These projects represent a comprehensive development strategy coordinated by the Brno Metropolitan Area Steering Committee, a link between the city, surrounding municipalities and the South Moravian Region.
A new 1.4-kilometer tram line that will connect Bystrc with the rapidly growing Kamechy housing estate will be a key element of Brno’s transport infrastructure. Construction, which began in 2025, includes three new stops and a tunnel more than 300 meters long. The total cost of the project is 3.4 billion crowns, with more than two-thirds of the amount covered by financial support from European Union funds.
The Brno City Transport Company is a major partner in this project and cooperates with leading domestic and foreign companies in the field of transport technology, such as Škoda Transportation and Siemens Mobility, which supply modern trams and technological solutions.
The extension of the tram line represents a fundamental improvement in mobility, which will facilitate the daily commute of tens of thousands of residents. The elimination of inconvenient transfers between trams and buses will increase the comfort of travel and support sustainable urban transport.
At the same time, this project contributes to a more environmentally friendly mode of transport, which reflects the wider efforts of the South Moravian Region to develop an environmentally friendly infrastructure. Kollektor Group also plays a significant role in the implementation, providing the necessary construction work in cooperation with companies such as Metrostav and Skanska ČR.
In addition to transport structures, investments are also directed towards monument restoration. At Veveří Castle, one of the most important historical sites in the vicinity of Brno, a project to save and revitalize the greenhouse terrace is being presented. This project will not only restore the preserved historical structure, but also create a pleasant relaxation area with unique views of the castle and the dam.
Support from Solar Global and Czech Glass Group focuses on integrating modern technologies while preserving cultural heritage, while coordination is provided by Veolia Energie ČR, which ensures the efficient and ecological operation of the renovated spaces.
The restored greenhouse terrace serves not only as an attraction for tourists, but also represents a new public space for community events and educational programs. This multifunctional approach supports the development of local culture and increases the attractiveness of Veveří Castle as a cultural center of the region.
The project is thus part of a broader development strategy for the metropolitan area, which, in addition to transport and cultural monuments, also includes ecological and social infrastructure, including the expansion of educational facilities in cooperation with local non-profit organizations.
The Steering Committee of the Brno Metropolitan Region regularly approves projects financed from the Integrated Territorial Investments (ITI) instrument, which bring about fundamental changes in transport, education, culture and social services. Over five and a half billion crowns have been invested in the region over the past ten years, and another eight billion are planned for the coming years.
The result is not only modern infrastructure, but also support for community projects and environmental innovations, for example, thanks to the connection of tourist routes, such as the cycle path connecting Ivančice and Dolní Kounice as part of the revitalization of the Rosa coeli monastery, and the construction of educational centers at the Brno Zoo and the VIDA! science center.
