An extremely ambitious project called Tropicalia is being built in the north of France, promising to become the largest tropical greenhouse in the world. The construction of this remarkable bio-dome with an area of 20,000 square meters will offer a unique experience to visitors and open a new chapter in the field of botanical gardens and tropical fauna in Europe. With a temperature maintained at a pleasant 28 degrees Celsius, Tropicalia will offer an environment reminiscent of a tropical paradise, connecting residents with a fascinating world of exotic plants and animals. The construction has been planned for several years and is designed by the renowned French architectural studio Coldefy, providing innovative solutions from design to environmental sustainability.
Unique architectural design of Tropicalia – the largest tropical greenhouse with advanced technology
The basic concept of Tropicalia was created as a challenge to combine the most modern architectural practices with the needs of tropical ecosystems. The greenhouse, 200 meters long and four meters thick, will be covered with a special ETFE material that allows daylight to pass through while ensuring optimal thermal conditions. Thanks to the unique 35-meter-high dome, which does not require any supports, the interior will have the impression of a truly open space, where tall tropical trees can grow without restrictions.
Visitors will encounter not only tropical plants, but also a rich fauna, including butterflies, hummingbirds, Amazonian fish, turtles and caimans. The detailed planning also included a 25-meter-high waterfall and several water gardens and ponds that place the television attraction in a real biotope, making Tropicalia a harmony between the artificial environment and nature.
Tropicalia as a new phenomenon in European botany and tourism
Tropicalia is expected to attract several hundred thousand visitors per year, who will have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of tropical biodiversity while enjoying unique natural scenery. The project thus complements the offer of well-known institutions such as the Prague Botanical Garden, as well as innovative horticultural enterprises such as Zahradnictví Starkl, AquaFlora or Exoticus, which focus on growing tropical plants and exhibiting exotic species.
The location of the greenhouse on the Côte d’Opale coast in the Pas-de-Calais department brings a new dimension to tourism in the region, where the climate is typically cold and humid. Tropicalia will create conditions here that are fundamentally different from the surrounding landscape, attracting not only tourists but also local residents and experts in the field of botany and ecology.
Technological innovations and sustainability of the Tropicalia project
In addition to its architectural uniqueness, the Tropicalia project will also attract attention with its cutting-edge sustainability technologies. The air conditioning system will carefully monitor and regulate the internal temperature and humidity to ensure optimal growth of tropical plants and animal health. It will be a year-round space, where effective efforts are still being made to minimize energy consumption and environmental impact.
It is also worth noting the involvement of companies specializing in large-scale garden and exotic installations – such as Mountfield, Flofa, Jungle Interiors or Zahradní centrum Chládek, which contribute their experience with exhibitions and equipment.
How Tropicalia inspires visitors and experts
The same project will provide inspiration to both gardeners who use products from brands such as Semena.cz to grow exotic plants at home, and to the general public. The section with its own research and teaching will serve as a platform for spreading environmental awareness and education about the importance of tropical ecosystems.
Thanks to the combination of expert knowledge, modern technology and aesthetic experience, Tropicalia also ranks among the top places in Europe that support ecological sustainability and the development of botanical science.
