A new modern greenhouse is about to be built in Karviná, but it has been somewhat smaller than originally planned and moved to a different location closer to the city center. This educational and scientific research park inspired by the British Eden Project will offer extensive gardening activities, provide space for nature excursions and open its doors to the general public and students. More than a year after the initial ideas for the Eden Silesia project were published, everything has been brought to a successful conclusion with the feasibility study. London-based architectural studio Grimshaw has designed a new form for the central building, which is based on the strong connection between man and nature and is inspired by natural shapes. The project is now located closer to the center of Karviná, which will facilitate public access and the use of urban infrastructure.
The park will include a variety of gardening areas, including water areas and arable gardens, covering approximately 50 hectares. The area will host not only professional courses, but also cultural events and community meetings, which will revitalize the local environment and bring new impetus to ecological education.
The central greenhouse building will offer a unique space for teaching and research, with a key role to be played by a new study program focused on regenerative landscape development, which is being prepared by the Silesian University in Opava together with Mendel University in Brno. This will create a modern university campus for students and professionals, which will support the practical use of the acquired knowledge.
However, the project is also open to the general public – visitors can look forward to guided tours, educational programs for different age groups and relaxation zones. One of the key aspects of the new greenhouse is its low energy requirements, which is supported by the application of green energy for heating and cooling. The Moravian Greenhouses thus represent not only an ecological but also an economically sustainable project. This approach contrasts markedly with the industrial past of the region, represented, for example, by the concrete tower of the Darkov mine.
Deputy Governor of the Moravian-Silesian Region Jakub Unucka highlighted that the reduced scale of the central building meets the requirements for efficiency and environmental friendliness, which increases the project’s chances of obtaining funding from the Just Transition Operational Programme. If all goes according to plan, design work should begin this year, with construction to be completed in 2026 and 2027.
Skleník Plus and Ekofarma Karviná will be part of a wider complex that is intended to bring new job opportunities and the development of agriculture. Visitors will find not only educational gardens, but also botanical exhibitions highlighting the importance of sustainable cultivation, which is inspired by tradition and modern practices known from Sklárny Karviná.
