In the center of Brno, near Mendel Square, where Johann Mendel planted the seeds of genetics in the 19th century, the restored Mendel greenhouse now stands. The restored building faithfully copies the original floor plan and orientation, thus referring to the significant scientific progress that began here more than a century ago. The greenhouse from 1954 was restored thanks to the cooperation of the city, Masaryk University, the Augustinian monastery and European funds.
It was in this laboratory that Mendel formulated the three basic laws of heredity, which are still the pillars of biology today. Students and scientists come here to repeat and expand his discoveries in the context of modern genetic research. The greenhouse has thus become not only a monument to historical genetics, but a living place for science, where tradition and innovation are intertwined and where the understanding of genetic principles is constantly developing.
