On the outskirts of Třebíč there is a unique agricultural area that perfectly combines pig breeding, energy production and growing herbs in a greenhouse. FarmaZelenéPrasata represents an innovative concept, where PigsAHerbs together form the basis of sustainable and economically efficient production. All parts of this EnergetickaFarm are interconnected in such a way that almost no waste is generated and all resources are used to maximize profit and environmental benefits. This synthesis becomes a model for modern agriculture and shows how ecological cooperation can boost production and reduce energy costs.
How a Farm with Pigs supplies energy for a greenhouse full of herbs
The farm near Třebíč is spread over an area where a twenty-hectare greenhouse has been added to the pig breeding. The pigs here not only produce meat, but also raw material for biogas production – slurry, which the farmers add to their biogas station. Thanks to this biogas, together with biomass from its own corn and sugar beet cuttings, the farm powers seven cogeneration units that produce electricity and heat. This heat is then used to heat the greenhouse, where thousands of herbs are grown.
“The concept of circular economy was created about 15 years after we ourselves practically implemented it,” says owner Karel Kuthan. This philosophy allows for minimizing waste – residues from the biogas station go back to the fields as fertilizer, while the farm sells surplus electricity to the grid. The farm thus functions as a real Green Farm Energy, which is almost self-sufficient and sustainable.
Unique synergistic interaction of biogas and photovoltaics for greenhouse operation
In addition to biogas, the farm has a rooftop photovoltaic power plant with an output of about 200 kilowatts and a ground-based solar power plant with an output of 50 kilowatts. The light from the sun not only nourishes the herbs in the greenhouses, but also supports energy production. When the sun is shining, photovoltaics cover most of the energy needs, and the lean output of the biogas stations is reduced. However, in the dark or cloudy weather, it is enough to start the cogeneration units within five minutes, which burn the biogas obtained from the piglets, thus ensuring continuous operation of the greenhouse.
Technical manager Václav Bajko explains that thanks to this efficient system, SklenikovaFarma saves approximately three quarters of a million cubic meters of natural gas per year for heating. Energy costs have thus fallen significantly below the original amounts, which confirms that EkologickaSpoluprace can be economically advantageous even for large-scale agricultural operations.
Practical advantages of connecting pigs and herbs on an energy farm
The FarmaZelenéPrasata project shows that connecting agricultural fields is not only an ecological trend, but also brings concrete benefits. Excess digestate from biogas production is returned to the field as high-quality fertilizer, which increases fertility and supports the growth of herbs in an energy-intensive greenhouse. The pigs lead to the production of PrasataProEnergii biogas, which is used in cogeneration. The result is the farm’s meat product, thousands of planted SynergieBylinek herbs and electricity, which becomes a source of additional income from sales.
The entire system works as a BioSklenikPrasata – a combination of ecology, efficiency and innovation that pushes the boundaries of Czech agriculture and their energy use. The farm has become an example in the given location where modern technologies and traditional agriculture work together for the benefit of a sustainable future.
